Burney Falls is located three and a half hours north of Elk Grove but it is truly worth the drive! There are small cabins and tent camping here. If coming during the summer I would come early or during the week. Getting into the park can take some time. It is $10 per vehicle
The best time to go is Spring and Fall, but we went in July on a Thursday morning and it was perfect!
The falls are directly to your left when you drive into the park. When you are in the parking lot you don’t hear much but once you start heading down the stairs the falls are very loud. The temperatures at Burney are pretty hot during the summer but once you start walking down to the water it drops dramatically.

The falls are so massive and have these beautiful small falls all around the outside of it. The kids and I loved climbing down the water and splashing around. You are not allowed to swim but we enjoyed just dipping our toes in and taking pictures.
After enjoying the water we did the Falls loop trail which is 1.2 miles. It was a good hike up hill and had some spots that were best to keep the kids away. Once you get to the top you can see the top of the falls and the beautiful river feeding into it.

There is a lake not far from the falls. We moved our car and parked nearby to enjoy the beach, but warning the water is cold!
If you are heading up North I would definitely make a detour to see Burney Falls.
